Whenever my wife and I travel to Gatlinburg we always take I-95 from Palm Bay Florida to I-26 from South Carolina and on into North Carolina and we usually have to stop at the first rest stop in North Carolina on I-26.
The reason we stop there, besides the fact that I usually have to go to the restroom, is that it’s the nicest rest stop on our 500 or so mile trek to Gatlinburg. In fact, its probably one of the nicest rest stops anywhere in the nation. As you can see by the picture, you just start getting into some hilly country and when you leave the stop heading northwest you immediately have a steep drive into the mountains.
Most rest stops aren’t anything to boast about, believe me. But this one is really nice and it’s a pleasant reminder that you are finally on vacation.
Here’s a satellite shot from Google Maps of the first rest stop in North Carolina on west I-26.
